  Evaporation basket.
This is a resistive heating element coiled into the shape of a basket. It was used to evaporate gold in a vacuum vapor deposition machine: The gold color is left over gold. Tungsten is a good material for making evaporation baskets for the same reason it's good for making light bulb filaments: It maintains its strength at very high temperatures.
